COACHING

  • Internationally acclaimed tenor Kyle Van Schoonhoven offers online and in-person voice lessons in Miami and throughout South Florida. He holds a Master of Music in Vocal Pedagogy and Performance from Westminster Choir College of Rider University, and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the State University of New York at Fredonia, along with New York State teaching certification. His academic training is complemented by extensive professional experience on the world’s leading opera stages.

As an active international performer, Kyle has appeared with major opera houses in the United States and abroad, including The Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, and Opéra de Rouen. His repertoire spans from Mozart and Handel to Wagner and Britten. He has had the opportunity to work with leading conductors such as Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Sir Donald Runnicles, Sir Simon Rattle, and Sir Andrew Davis; as well as coachings with Warren Jones, John Parr, John Churchwell, and Alan Darling. His training also includes formal study in vocal pedagogy with Dr. Scott McCoy and Dr. Christopher Arneson.

Kyle is a winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, a George London Award recipient, a George London–Nicolai Gedda Memorial Award winner, and a recipient of the Richard Tucker Foundation’s Sarah Tucker Study Grant.

Kyle offers individualized voice lessons and stylistically grounded coachings for singers at a wide range of stages, with particular emphasis on those aspiring toward professional careers. He has worked as a voice teacher and coach with universities and conservatories across the United States, including institutions in New York, Illinois, Florida, and California, and previously served as a Professor of Voice at the State University of New York at Fredonia before relocating to Miami. He is a frequent lecturer and master teacher at the New World School of the Arts, partnered with Miami Dade College and the University of Florida, bringing both academic clarity and real-world perspective to his teaching. Professional, college, and conservatory singers frequently study with him as a supplemental teacher to strengthen technique, language, and stylistic understanding alongside their primary studio work.

He also works closely with high school and pre-college singers preparing for auditions and college applications, offering a strong technical foundation informed by his background in music education. For advanced singers, Kyle provides detailed musical and technical guidance shaped by current professional expectations, helping bridge the gap between training and the realities of the industry. His teaching is direct, experience-driven, and results-focused, aimed at developing confident, competitive artists with durable technique and artistic integrity.

  • Lessons are offered to aspiring vocalists seeking technical development and stylistic versatility. Instruction emphasizes the establishment of reliable classical technique, targeted work toward upcoming auditions, and the development of technical proficiency. Repertoire study includes opera, oratorio, symphonic works, lieder, chanson, art song, operetta, music theatre, and crossover genres, approached with attention to style, language, and professional performance standards.

  • All coachings are approached with respect for the singer’s existing training. The goal is to support and reinforce the technical and artistic foundations established by the primary teacher, offering informed guidance that complement, rather than contradict, ongoing studio work. Collaboration, continuity, and artistic growth remain central to every session.

Our coachings will focus on deepening musicianship, stylistic awareness, and language proficiency rather than replacing core technical instruction. Work centers on refining musical detail, diction, phrasing, and stylistic nuance, helping singers bring greater clarity and sophistication to repertoire already in progress. This format is particularly well suited for singers who study regularly with a primary voice teacher and are seeking an additional perspective to polish and elevate their work.
